For a long time the Surabaya Zoo is under fire over the bad treatment and care of animals. The Indonesian government sent a temporary team to manage and improve conditions at the zoo, but no real improvements have been made. This zoo has problems with uncontrolled breeding, a lack of funding for animal welfare, and suspicions that staff may be involved in illegal wildlife trafficking. Also one of the problems in the zoo is the conflict in staff and the Mayor regarding keeping what is being referred as "historical significant" cages (old and inhumane cages).
The Sumatran tiger Melani is very well known from the poster for the bad treatment of animals at the Surabaya Zoo. Due to the public outcry, in June 2013 Melani was rescued and moved at Taman Safari Park for specialized care.
In late October 2013, the Indonesian Minister of Forestry came to visit Melani. She is now eating well, has direct sunlight in her den area and the company of tiger friends.
Melani is safe but animals are still suffering in Surabaya Zoo. The female orangutan Nanik is the latest animal who died in zoo quarantine facility.

Unfortunately, there is more bad news about the fate of the animals in Surabaya zoo. Damlier, the last black Jaguar, died 14th November. Surabaya zoo should be closed down and all animals sent to sanctuaries. I don’t understand how this could have gone on for so long? Thank you for your comments Respect All Life, Ruth and Trish!
