LION OF SURABAYA ZOO MURDERED? | Take Action Immediately

The Surabaya Zoo in Indonesia is being investigated by police following the death of the 18-month-old lion called Michael, who got his head stuck between steel cables on January 6, 2014. The lion's body was removed before police were able to examine it and cannot now be found. This tragedy comes just 24 hours after it was learned that a wildebeest died in its enclosure from a stomach problem.

Michael was sent to the zoo last March by the East Java Natural Resources Conservation Agency.

CEE4LIFE PRESS RELEASE

January 10, 2014: CEE4LIFE OPEN LETTER TO THE MAYOR OF SURABAYA

It seems that there have been 2 lions killed at Surabaya Zoo. First a young male apparently caught his head between two bars of the cage, and second the Lioness that we reported on yesterday who was murdered by hanging noose. Police are investigating this at the moment.

PLEASE CONTINUE TO SIGN THE PETITION, which will be presented to the Mayor of Surabaya in late January.

Closing it down is not an option. The other zoos have refused to take the animals because of their condition, illnesses and diseases. We must convince the Mayor of Surabaya and the Director of the Surabaya Zoo to allow professional aid into the long-suffering animals of Surabaya.

UPDATE: SURABAYA ZOO LION’S DEATH NOT MALICIOUS
Despite having closed the investigation into the lion’s death, police would continue investigating other animal deaths at the Surabaya Zoo. With the young lion’s death, there are now only four African lions left at the zoo. The lion had been rescued by the East Java BKSDA before it was sent to the Surabaya zoo in March 2013.
