LET'S SAVE NIKO, LOCKED UP FOR 2 YEARS AT THE CHARLOTTESVILLE ALBEMARLE SPCA

This is urgent appeal to save a five-year-old Staffordshire terrier named NIKO. He has been sentenced to death for allegedly killing a cat in December 2014. This loving family dog has been locked in a tiny kennel for 2 years at the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA, Virginia. He's not allowed to go out unless his owners come and take him out.

Niko was scheduled to die December 18th 2016 but an injunction was filed and he has been issued a stay until January 18th 2017.

Meanwhile, the non-profit agency Against All Oddz Animal Alliance, Inc. is working to strike a deal that will spare the accused dog’s life. The agency released a statement on December 15, 2016.

NIKO IS RUNNING OUT OF TIME! PLEASE SIGN PETITIONS & SHARE.

LESSONS FROM THE ANIMALS

The story take place in New Zealand after the earthquake 2011.

It begins with the rescuers finding this
poor little guy they named Ralphie.
Someone had already taken him under their
wing but they weren't equipped to adopt.

Ralphie, scared and starved, joined his rescuers...

I wouldn't think anything could live thru this...
but we were wrong.

This little lady also survived that wreckage.

Here she is just placed in the car - scared, but safe.

and then... they are no longer alone!

Instant friends, they comforted
each other while in the car.

Add two more beagles found after that...
the more, the merrier!

Oh boy, a new traveler to add to the mix...
(Note: the cat coming over the seat needing shelter)
Now just how is this going to work?
(and remember they are all strange to one another)

It's going to work just fine, thank you very much!

Wow! The things we learn from our animal friends.
If only mankind could learn such valuable lessons as this.
Lessons of instant friendship. Of peace and harmony by way of respect
for one another – no matter one's color or creed. These animals tell you:
"It's just good to be alive and with others." Yes, it surely is.
So... Live, love, laugh.

Life’s a gift … Unwrap It!

HELP ANIMALS IN HAITI AFTER HURRICANE MATTHEW

Hurricane Matthew whipped through Haiti, leaving horrible destruction in its path. The thousands of animals were affected by the storm and left behind in the terrifying chaos.

Some of the animals were abandoned at the time of the hurricane. Donkeys had cargo strapped to their bodies and were still tethered to their workstations.
Haiti’s dog who survived the intense hurricane with no proper shelter is a miracle.

According to HSI: “There are hundreds of dogs, cats, goats, cows and donkeys who, just like the people here, have been through a traumatic event and their stress is apparent.”

Humane Society International is on the ground in Haiti!

It’s amazing to see HSI Animal Rescue Team helping the animals in need face to face. With your help, HSI be able to provide sick and injured animals with food, water, veterinary care and vaccinations to prevent the spread of disease. Please, DONATE to help the animals affected by Hurricane Matthew.

Serbia's Forgotten Paws: SOS FOR SERBIAN ANIMALS!

The city pound in Niš last weeks has been rounding up dogsin order to euthanise them – since then, animal welfare organisations and the city officials have been having meetings in order to come to an agreement how to HUMANELY DEAL WITH THE STRAY POPULATION.

Still dogs in the pound are dying every day!

The rescuers have pulled out over 30 most critical dogs. They have been starved during their time in the pound, so now they need better quality food to help them recover and put weight back on. Also, they need urgent veterinary care.

These are 3 of many dogs that need your help:

SONJA is only 18 months old puppy. She had been at the pound since 17th February and now she is walking skeleton. Her liver is really bad and she's fighting an infection. The vets and rescuers are doing all they can to save this beautiful girl.

BOKI is about 3 years old. He has been at the pound for a few weeks and has been castrated there. He has demodex, papillomatosis, allergies and laryngotracheitis. Boki had no proper veterinary care in the pound but vets are doing all they can for him now.

BAKA is 10 years old, very underweight and struggling to stand due to cachexia. Moreover, he has been castrated in the pound. This sweetie was rescued last week – just in time!

Over 30 lives depend on your help!

Four Paws: THE STORY OF GRIVITA – MOST AMAZING DOG SURVIVAL FROM ROMANIA Donate & Share!

Grivita was a friendly and tame stray when she was cruelly and brutally attacked.

Cared for by residents of an apartment complex near a Bucharest railway station, Grivita was discovered with injuries too horrific to showSomebody had completely destroyed her nose and jaw, leaving her to suffer. Distraught, the woman who found Grivita called FOUR PAWS at once.

FOUR PAWS vets immediately administered first aid, and took her to a nearby hospital. A veterinary team led by Dr. Iustin Girea from the Ortovet Clinic and Four Paws vets quickly treated Grivita. They cleaned her wounds and operated on the broken bones of her lower jaw.

Although Grivita’s condition was serious, she recovered from her injuries and was soon able to eat and drink unassisted. While she still bears the scars of her shocking experience, Grivita has not lost trust in humans, or her enthusiasm for life.

Grivita is now living out her days at FOUR PAWS supported shelter Speranta, close to Bucharest, where she is cared for and dearly loved by everyone.  A happy and charming dog, Grivita always welcomes other dogs and especially humans with a wagging tail.

The street dogs of Romania are hated, poisoned, beaten, stabbed, shot, run over by cars, burned, and dumped in pits to starve to death. Hundreds of thousands of innocent dogs are condemned to death every year, their only crime is being born.

BE A VOICE FOR WILLIAM!

Run free William.

The male goat, nicknamed William escaped on January 29, 2016 from University of Iowa Research Park in Coralville, while being transferred from a portable carrier to a vehicle.

William made a heroic bid for freedom and spent 10 days roaming the local area, garnering attention from homeowners who spotted him and followers of a Twitter account in his honor, before the University of Iowa police recovered him.

The animal has been used in painful orthopedic research as a part of a multi-year study funded by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. The University reports that it uses about 70,000 animals in research. The vast majority — as much as 99.5 percent — are mice, rats, fish, frogs and pigeons. There are also 14 goats.

Several animal sanctuaries specializing in former research subjects have offered to give William a permanent home. University of Iowa officials have turned down all requests to relocate the goat. William, they say, remains involved in federally funded research.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has called for an investigation of UI's handling of the goat, arguing that the animal's escape was the result of violations of the Animal Welfare Act.

William after is back at the UI Research Park

Subject: PLEASE RELEASE WILLIAM THE GOAT TO A SANCTUARY!

After the goat William escaped on January 29, 2016 from University of Iowa Research Park, he is the center of widespread public concern. William deserves to live free from pain and torment. In addition, the animal is now unsuitable as a research subject due to roaming freely outside the lab environment.

We ask the University of Iowa to do the right thing and immediately start making arrangements to relocate this goat to an accredited sanctuary, to people who care and will let him live the rest of his life in peace & happiness.

REPLY FROM DANIEL A. REED:

Thank you for your email.
We appreciate your comments. The University of Iowa takes the safety and health of its animals seriously.
However, because this animal is part of ongoing, federally funded research, the University of Iowa is not able to consider offers from members of the public or other organizations to take over its care.

ANIMAL WELFARE ASSOCIATIONS FROM THE WORLD JOINED FORCES TO STOP MASS KILLING OF STRAY DOGS IN SERBIA | Take Actions!

Very disturbing news from Serbia's Forgotten Paws

The notorious public shelter "Naš dom" in Požega has admitted on TV B92 that last year they euthansed 1280 dogs out of 1350 that captured and they also released a document giving their estimates for this year. They will aim to catch 1500 dogs out of which 1300 will be euthanised.

These dogs are not humanly euthanised. In the past washing up liquid has been injected into dogs which then suffered for hours and died a slow agonizing death. No one is allowed access to this pound, so we can only imagine the horrors the dogs endure. No food, no water, dogs are eating each other...

Things have not changed. If anything, things have got worse - this government institution is now openly saying that they will kill 90% of dogs.

Also, the city of Niš has started rounding all homeless animals up to be euthanised after an attack on elderly woman by a pack of dogs.

You can see one "aggressive" dog looking as they take away her babies not daring to come any closer. Yes, they took the puppies away.

The dogcatchers have been watched by Serbian activists: 69 dogs are in the pound, which is not equipped to even have 20 dogs safely. The dogcatchers will be out getting more.

We're waiting patiently for Serbia to do the right thing!

OVER 90 ANIMAL WELFARE ASSOCIATIONS JOINED FORCES TO STOP THE KILLING OF SERBIAN DOGS

The protest letter signed by 56 animal welfare associations from the world:

"A notorious kill shelter in Serbia has yesterday admitted on the news that last year they euthansed 1280 dogs out of 1350 that they captured and they also released a document giving their estimates for this year. They will aim to catch 1500 dogs out of which 1300 will be euthanised.

This is illegal under the Serbian animal welfare law but the government is turning a blind eye because it suits them. If we do not act now, and they carry on this murder, other pounds will do the same and there will be no stopping them.
The dogs are NOT humanly euthanised.
We are in possession of another document stating that euthanising a dog costs 60 RSD which is less than 50 pence which should be enough to tell you that they’re not doing it humanely.

In the past washing up liquid has been injected into dogs which then suffered for hours and hours and died a slow agonising death. Even poison is cheaper than 60 RSD!

What they’re doing is illegal and they must be stopped. No one is allowed access to the pound so we can only imagine the horrors the dogs endure. One of the rescuers we know broke in a few years ago and witness horrifying scenes. Dogs eating each other was just some of those horrific things. Mothers eating their dead babies because there was no other food. No water. Things have not changed. If anything, things have got worse; this government-run institution is now OPENLY saying that they will kill 1300 out of 1500 dogs.
This is why we are acting now before it is too late and we have another Romania on our hands. Serbia wants to join the EU. We cannot allow this to happen when they’re not respecting their own laws.
Over 50 organisations from abroad and 40 Serbian organisations have joined forces to STOP this planned massacre. We have been busy sending letters to government officials, institutions and the media. We are awaiting their response before taking this disregard for the law further and dealing with the proposed massacre of innocent dogs.
Whilst we have been busy with this behind the scenes, another emergency was brought to our attention.
The city of Nis has unofficially started rounding dogs up to be euthanised after an alleged attack on an elderly woman by a pack of unruly dogs. You can see one of these 'aggressive' dog looking as they take away her babies not daring to come any closer. Yes, they took the puppies away.
The dog catchers have been watched by our Serbian colleagues and a total of 69 dogs is now at the city pound. The media is reporting that these dogs are on the streets because they’re being released from private shelters due to lack of funds for sterilisation and food. This is not true. All of our dogs are neutered and all of our dogs are fed which is more than can be said for those that they take in.
The 69 dogs are now in the pound which is not equipped to even have 20 dogs safely. We have been to this pound personally and seen the conditions. There is NO room to house 69 dogs. The dog catchers will be out getting more tomorrow.
Our Serbian friends will follow them, just like they did today and ensure that the dogs are handled as humanely as possible and that every animal is photographed and documented so that the pound cannot murder them. All dogs caught today that were witnessed by activists were friendly and appeared in good health. This means by law they cannot be killed.
All 69 will be saved as soon as they’re allowed out but this is not the answer. We must end this ridiculous rounding up and culling of strays and must focus on CATCH, NEUTER, RELEASE (CNR) schemes. CNR is the cheapest, most humane solution for the stray situation in Serbia, or any country.
Once more, we have joined forces with various organisation and contacted various officials pointing out that the world is watching. We know what they’re doing. We know they’re breaking the law. They will have to change their plan.
We are awaiting a response from a few government officials and expect an emergency meeting to be called with Serbian NGO’s to resolve the situation once and for all. We will be acting accordingly.
For now, please have a look at the list of organisations who are on our side about Pozega's decision. Contact any organisations who you might think would like to join in on our fight for justice. Get them to contact us if they’re interested in being added to the list.
Together we stay strong, divided we fall. Tomorrow we will need your help but for now, we're waiting patiently for Serbia to do the right thing!

Translation of the protest letter signed by 40 animals welfare associations from Serbia and also by the foreign associations from above:

To whom it might concern,
We strongly condemn JKP “ Naš Dom” Pozega for their behavior in terms of treatment of abandoned animals. The Animal Welfare Act in Serbia clearly stipulates that abandoned animals cannot be killed except in exceptional circumstances, but must be housed and cared for in the shelters, yet we learned that JKP “ Naš Dom” is planning to kill 90% of the dogs that they catch in 2016.
On the news tonight (16.03.2016 ), on the TV station B92, JKP “ Naš Dom” admitted that in year 2015 out of 1350 captured dogs, 1280 were killed!
We are outraged and appalled by such disrespect of the current law by an institution JKP “ Naš Dom” which is governed by the state! This institution, clearly feels they’re above the law! We will be notifying all competent authorities in the EU and beyond and will be looking into taking measures to prevent future illegal slaughter of animals in Serbia.
We also must add that we are aware of current lynch on street dogs in Nis which is almost announced publicly as form of revenge for the attack carried out on an elderly woman by a pack of dogs. We are also aware of all the unlawful poisonings and killings of animals which are happening in Serbia because the institutions governed by the state assigned to deal with the problem are not following the laws and therefore are failing to deal with the problem as well as not dealing with irresponsible owners who abandon their animals and are part of the problem.
So far we have pointed out how to humanely solve the problem of abandoned animals and for us it is devastating that Serbia does not actually apply these measures. Measures, which are prescribed by the Law.
We are disgusted with the way the law in Serbia is circumvented and we will be taking all measures in our power to stop the planned killing of 1300 animals by JKP “ Naš Dom” in 2016 .
